Here's Barbara's Weekly Newsletter.  I haven't had time and don't have time right now to read the articles she's provided access to; however, I have seen some stuff referring to a truckers' strike being planned for April 23, 24, somewhere around there.  I suggest you get a little food and essentials put back.  Maybe she's got some news on the planned strike in these articles.

Teamsters Come Out Swinging

Teamsters' President Jim Hoffa says about the Cross Border Truck Program:
 
"They are playing a game of Russian Roulette on America's highways...Mexico refuses to meet their end of the bargain yet Bush rewards them with open access to American highways. It is the American driving public who will pay the consequences."
 
The Teamsters contend that:
    • The lack of an adequate drug and alcohol testing program,
    • The inability of DOT safety inspectors to have access to Mexican facilities to conduct safety fitness reviews and 
    • The fact that hours-of-service and logbook regulations are not enforced
are just some of the vehicle and driver standards that need to be addressed.

SmartPort and NAFTA Offshore jobs

An excellent article was published this week by Jerry Razza, in The Canadian titled "Bush Administration pursues a greed driven North American Union Agenda".
 
Mr. Razza's article is both informative and enjoyable to read. For example  of the North American Union, he writes...
"The idea is to mix the United States, North and eventually South Americas into one banquet for the multi-national corporations to gobble"
 
He seems to agree that surface transportation is being altered in North America as a result of the pursuit of cheap labor.
 
 
US Labor thought import transportation and distribution jobs could not be offshored...they were dead wrong
 
With the emergence of the KC Smartport, the NAFTA Railway (the merging of the Kansas City Southern RR with 2 major Mexican Railroads) and the deepwater Mexican ports, transportation and distribution have changed the direction of labor and goods from "West to East", to "South to North". And with Mexican truckers driving our highways, many US transportation workers are going to be out of work.

Highway Privatization News
moneygrab NewJersey- poll shows citizens opposition to sell or lease of toll roads
Nevada-discusses PPP as alternative for highway funding; addressed by former Dem. Rep. Dick Gephardt (MO) who now lobbies for Goldman Sachs, and private public partnerships.
Kansas-private trade group buys grain elevator operations in Louisiana to boost its Mexican export business. Links to NAFTA railroad  (KS city Southern) facilities. The group is backed by Australian financial services giant Macquarie Bank.
 
Sound off: privatization is digging deeper  and deeper into our economy every day.  Formerly public assets and services are being contracted, leased and sold to private and often global companies. Current and former public officials are leading the way.
 
The enormous amount of money involved is drawing premier investment funds-like the (US) Carlisle Group and (Australian) Macquarie-and deal makers like Goldman Sachs.
 
Profit will trump public policy if left to Corporate execs.
 
However, this country is "of the people and by the people". And we can change this direction-as was shown by our friends in Indiana last week.
 
We can change the direction....
 
It takes action. Contact your elected representatives. Tell them you support the American worker. Not the Mexican worker, or the Chinese worker, or the Australian bankers.
